WOYWW #176 - sock, square, sew

Hello. It's Wednesday again. That means it's time for What's on your Workdesk? Wednesday. That also means it's time for me to show you my desk, whatever state it is in, and also for the rest of the World to show you their desks.

So, today, my desk.

I am, as you can probably see, the proud owner of a new sewing machine. My first. I don't really sew, but I want to.

I'm so excited about some of the stitches it does. I want to do quilting and free motion sewing (one day) and this one does that! Wahoooooooooooo.

So I started to sew a new sock monkey. Normally I hand sew but after a while it falls apart (much loving), and then I realised machine sewing is not only stronger but quicker.

There is a pile of 'ends' which I painstakingly cut from my Round Squares. Now I have enough for a cushion cover, back and front. However, in true 'me' style, I have not got enough wool to sew them all together. aaaggghhhhh, so I'm thinking I might have to add another row in another colour (obviously one that I can also use to sew them together). What a numpty!

I also have the start of my Christmas Bunting. I have only done one - Grandma and I went Thrifty shopping and picked up a bag of scraps for just $1 - bargain. All Christmas bits too. Who doesn't love bunting at Christmas?

Also on my desk is my resident monkey (pattern from Annaboos House) that I crocheted, glass of coke to keep me going and some new patriotic ribbon. I was going to make union jacks but I bought the wrong width white ribbon.

Anyway, that's me done for today. I will try much harder to visit everyone (especially if you end in the same number as me), I was missing last week (visitors) and the week before I posted but still had visitors so couldn't visit as many as would have liked.

See you soon.

Your sewing machine makes some awesome stitches. Mine sews forward and backward (grin). I hope you love yours as much as I love mine. Of course, I usually only sew paper. You will get much more good out of yours. Happy WOYWW from # 2.

I have a feeling that your new sewing machine is going to get lots of love and lots of use! How cool that it does the freestyle stitching! I'm always amazed at quilting patterns and how many different ones there are.

I think you are going to grow to love that machine. Fabulous that it makes such gorgeous stitches.
Hope you will show us the finished monkey. Both my husband and i had one as kids and we both still remember them fondly and their names!

Yay, you got a sewing machine! There'll be no stopping you now!! :) And, of course, bunting is the prefect way to start *grin*
Jo taught me a few basic stitches in crochet at the crop, now all I need to do is get time to practise! I've got a craft fair on Sunday so am trying to get stuff together for that...

Oo! Congratulations on the new sewing machine - you're going to have fun with the embroidery stitches. My old machine had some beauties programmed in but it was ultra-heavy so I passed it on to my daughter and now have a lightweight one - it's okay but I miss my old one ... a lot! Love your sock monkey and I'm sure the machine sewn one will be as much loved as earlier ones. The bag of scraps was surely the bargain of the year :) I hope you have a great week and a happy WOYWW. Wow your new sewing machine looks super-fancy. Mine just goes back and forward! Still it does the job I guess. Loving the start of your Xmas bunting. Be sure to share the finished item.

Fantastic new machine, you'll have lots of advice from woyww friends if you need help, not me though, can't seq for toffee. When we got this house we didn't like the price of good curtains over here so Andrew bought a machine, taught himself how to use it and made most of the curtains in our house!! He then had to show me how to use it (oh the shame!) and I made a pair of sheers for a bedroom!! The bunting looks fab, and I'm a numpty too, I'm not sure I have enough wool to complete Andrew's socks now!! How's your sock coming along??

Thanks for making my day. Almost as good as my friend Laura who posted on FB last night that she was crocheting with fingerling wool! To which I responded I was dead impressed if she was crocheting with a potato!!!!

We always wanted a sock monkey, alas our sewing skills are sadly lacking.

((Sighs))... I'd love a grown up sewing machine to make lots of lovely things with - but I only have one of those little table top ones, just about good enough to put stitches on my cards!

Well done on the crocheting - and an ingenious idea to bring in another colour so the you can also use it to sew your bits together. I can knit scarves - maybe I should made smaller ones and sew together to make a cushion cover - i'd never get to doing anything bigger!!!

Lots of potential sitting there on your desk (you can tell the monkey I said so). Thanks for dropping by my studio this week.

How exciting to get a sewing machine, Famfa! I am still using mine (although not so much these days) that I had for my 21st birthday, 38 years ago! It was very advanced for its day, and although it doesn't do a lot of fancy embroidery stitches, it does do a stretch stitch (2 or 3 forward, 1 back) with some embroidery variations, and of course, zig zag. I've made many many things on it, and for a brief period of my life, actually tried to earn my living with it!

Love your crochet too. The "round squares" are gorgeous.

Thanks for your lovely comment - if you want to see the art journal page finished, pop back to my blog as I've done a post about it since yesterday. As for the family crisis, I can't see things improving much really as my parents are now so elderly and vulnerable - it's a great worry, and a huge burden on my hubby's shoulders too!

Happy belated WOYWW,

Thanks for popping back to my blog, Famfa, and I'm so glad you like what I've done! This is a new area for me, too. I'm not into baring my heart and soul in journalling like some people do, but expressing ideas in words and art definitely has its attractions!

Both my parents may end up in full-time care but we'd like to avoid that if possible - the plan is to sell their house, get them moved somewhere less rural and remote (with local amenities nearby) and then join them when my hubby retires in 18 months' time, but it looks as if more drastic steps may need to be taken before he can retire. We'd hoped to get them moved before any crises occurred but my dad developed a UTI and got very confused, was in and out of hospital a couple of times, and is now in residential care, probably permanently, but if we were on the spot and had carers coming in, we could manage. It's just the timing that sucks! Mum is on her own and coping better than she thinks, but she's stuck out in the sticks with no amenities, is very deaf, and my hubby is having to cope with all the little probs that Dad used to deal with - from a distance! My health is poor and I'm unable to pull my weight, and worrying about it certainly doesn't help! It's all very difficult...

My question is, are your round squares meant to be round or square? LOL....

They look fab though...

Thanks for stopping by!
